Switch Kit $235.00(USD)

These switch kits (#5-20 ft radius) come with very detailed instructions, and a full sized plan to lay the parts on. You have to cut ties for this kit, and the sizes are given in the instructions. We can tell you where to purchase recycled plastic lumber that is cut to the right size for ties. Enough 1/2 inch rail is included with the kit to finish it, including guard rails.

For most outdoor layouts, laying a roadbed of crushed gravel is sufficient. Once the track sections are placed on top of the roadbed, 1/4 inch screenings (sometimes known as stone dust) act as a very good ballast to hold the ties in place, and to allow leveling of the track.

The switch kits come with blueprints that are actual size that you can lay your ties and track out on. You then attach clips to the ties with supplied screws, and then lay the track into the clips and fold the little tabs of the clips over to hold the track in place. A frog and points and all connecting hardware is included. You will find the first switch very time consuming as you read the instructions and lay it out. The second switch goes much more quickly, and will take in the 10 to 12 hour range to make. The first switch will take longer, how much longer will depend on how carefully and slowly you read the instructions. Once built, the switches will stand up for 10 to 20 years with practically no maintenance other than cleaning and lubricating them about once a year.
